Even after decades of the modern sushi craze in the U.S., there are still a lot of people who think “raw fish” when they think of sushi. But did you know that sushi isn’t actually a food or ingredient, it’s the method of preparation?
Surprised? Brace yourself because you're about to get a crash-course into the mystery and bold evolution of a dish best served, well, hot or cold, really. While sushi is a traditional Japanese standard, it’s become a world favorite. With the growing popularity of Asian fusion cooking, particularly in the U.S., it's spawned lively enthusiasm for experimentation and creativity.
The singular constant of sushi is rice. Rice is in all sushi, and sushi is not sushi without rice. Got that? Good, because here’s where the fun starts and things get really inventive. There’s no limit to the diverse, daring mixes of flavors and textures to be enjoyed. Although some sushi is made with raw fish, it's hardly the only option. So if that isn’t for you, we're happy to tell you that there's a world of sushi you’ve yet to discover.
No Raw Fish? No Problem
If the idea of raw fish has been holding you back from trying sushi, it's time to throw that fear out the window. We have a number of tasty alternatives at GENKI Noodles and Sushi if you'd rather not dine on raw fish, and we encourage you to try them! Here are some of our favorites.
Tamago – Made with eggs, rice vinegar, sake and soy, this roll is hearty, satisfying and filling. Tamago is a great choice if this is your first time eating sushi. It's also a familiar-looking dish the kids might be willing to try.
Unagi – Grilled freshwater eel, this dish is light, textured and savory. If you have never eaten eel, or have been scared to try it, this is the dish for you. We think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
Ebi – The name might sound odd, but ebi is just shrimp! When you order this, you'll get something familiar and un-intimidating but served in some new ways. We have a fantastic sweet shrimp that is ideal for both kids and adults to try.
California Roll – A tried and true Fusion staple everyone has heard about, even if they haven’t tried it, the California Roll is made with crab, cucumber and avocado. It's gentle on the palate and delicious on the tongue.
Dynamite Roll – In this roll, you'll find cooked chopped tuna, salmon and yellowtail with veggies and scallions, drizzled with a sassy, spicy sauce. This roll is a little more adventurous, but we definitely think it's worth a try!
Masago – This is made of smelt roe, or eggs, offered as part of many of our sushi dishes! Roe is a great favorite in Japanese cooking, adding a unique flavor and touch of elegance to each bite.
This is a small sampling of the many choices of sushi you can try without eating raw fish. We recommend starting out with our veggie dishes, like kympro (squash) and oshinko (pickled radish), then work your way up. But if you want to dive right in, go for the cooked fish dishes or try the roe options! If you're still unsure, just ask our servers or chef for suggestions. Sushi is our passion, and we would be happy to help you.
